Why Breaking Bad Habits Feels Impossible

I’ve tried countless methods to break my bad habits, but none of the usual tips and tricks have given me lasting success. We often resort to strange tactics and take advice from anyone who claims to have the solution.

One of the most common pieces of advice is: ‘Replace a bad habit with a good one.’ But that’s flawed. It doesn’t work.

I’ve found a much more effective way to change our habits and, ultimately, our lives. I’d like to share it with you, but first, let’s start by asking ourselves a simple question.

“What’s A Bad Habit?”

For me, it’s anything we do that doesn’t provide a positive outcome. Sometimes, it’s what we avoid doing that qualifies as a bad habit. Take laziness, for example — I consider it a bad habit.

If you find yourself too lazy to get out of bed, clean your house, or hit the gym, it doesn’t mean you’re a worthless person — it just means you have a habit you need to change.

That’s how I view most unproductive behavior. I’m not saying everyone shares the same outlook on life, but if, like me, you believe the purpose of life is to be useful, you need habits that support that belief.
